About this collection:
“I am very interested in both art and politics and how these two topics influence each other. I began exploring their relationship by looking at a variety of global political events, and selected a number of those based on my interest and how personal the issue was to me. Drawing thumbnail sketches allowed me to explore how I might express the core issue behind each event and how it would help shape the composition of the piece. I wanted to expand and explore art styles I hadn't worked in before, so researched each event to identify the most important themes of the issue and how they might be illustrated differently. For example, I used an abstract style for my piece on Rohingya refugees, and was inspired by American modernism for the Hong Kong extradition bill protests. Over the course of my research, the thumbnails evolved with my ideas about the events. I found this interesting as it shows how the motivation of the event and the artist's ideas behind the piece influence the final result. It has since made me think about how a piece of graffiti, a poster or a drawing is seen by people, how they interpret the images they see and how that contributes to how they engage in politics.”
